Building Sciences Leader – Toronto Office

Alston Associates, the geotechnical division of Terrapex Environmental Ltd., is searching for an experienced Building Sciences Engineer to start up, develop and manage a Building Sciences Division, and expand the overall services provided by the Terrapex/Alston Team.

The successful candidate will be able to provide building sciences services on a variety of projects, working out of our existing office in Toronto, and will be able to preform the following tasks:

    • Building envelope inspection and testing for residential, commercial and industrial buildings (roofing, curtain wall and balcony, windows and skylights, cladding, air & vapor barrier, sealants, waterproofing, damp proofing, precast, structural steel, fireproofing, etc.);
    • Building Restoration and Condition Assessment;;
    • Reserve Fund Studies;
    • Due diligence building condition surveys;
    • Construction Audits and Performance Audits;

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

    • establishing and managing a Building Sciences Division;
    • providing field inspection and testing services;
    • preparation of technical proposals and reports;
    • recruiting and training intermediate junior Building Sciences staff;
    • training geotechnical and environmental staff to carry out building sciences testing and inspection;
    • development and maintenance of client relationships; and
    • managing staff and resource allocation within the Building Sciences Division.

Requirements and Experience:

    • degree from an accredited university in Building Sciences or Civil Engineering;
    • registered as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario;
    • a minimum of 10 years of diverse building sciences experience;
    • strong technical and project management skills;
    • superior verbal and written communication skills; and
    • valid Driver’s License.

Successful candidate will also possess:

    • Entrepreneurial spirit with previous business development experience;
    • Energetic, self motivated, results-oriented go-getter;
    • Composed, confident demeanour, comfortable in a variety of settings (e.g. clients, contractors, technical staff, executives);

Geotechnical Engineer – Ottawa Office

Alston Associates, the geotechnical division of Terrapex Environmental Ltd., is searching for an intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to provide geotechnical engineering services on a variety of projects including transportation, land development, terrain, residential/commercial/industrial projects, and material inspection and testing services in the Ottawa region, working out of Terrapex’s branch office in Ottawa.

The position will report to the Vice President of Alston in Toronto. Technical and administrative support will be provided by Alston geotechnical staff in Toronto, and by the Terrapex Office Branch Manager in Ottawa. The successful candidate will be responsible for:p>

    • preparation of technical proposals and reports;
    • management and performance of geotechnical investigations;
    • laboratory testing of soils and granular materials;
    • providing field inspection and testing services;
    • training junior geotechnical engineering staff as the office grows;
    • assisting in the maintenance and development of client relationships in the Ottawa area.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and qualifications:

          • degree from an accredited university in Geological, Geotechnical, or Civil (geotechnical option) Engineering;
          • registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario;
          • a minimum of 5 years of diverse geotechnical engineering and inspection and testing experience;
          • strong technical and project management skills;
          • good oral and written communication in addition to administrative skills;
          • valid Driver’s License; and
          • knowledge of local geotechnical conditions and the regional market.

Experience in environmental engineering and the ability to speak French would be assets.

Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer – Toronto or Burlington Office

Alston Associates, the geotechnical division of Terrapex Environmental Ltd., is searching for an intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to provide geotechnical engineering services on a variety of projects including transportation, land development, residential/commercial/industrial projects, and material inspection and testing services in the GTA region, working out of Alston’s Head Office in Toronto or out of our Burlington branch office.

Working under the leadership and support of our geotechnical services manager and geotechnical staff in Toronto, the successful candidate will be responsible for:p>

    • preparation of technical proposals and reports;
    • management and performance of geotechnical investigations;
    • training junior staff to carry out geotechnical testing and inspection;
    • providing field inspection and testing services;
    • recruiting and training junior geotechnical engineering staff;
    • assisting in the maintenance and development of client relationships.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and qualifications:

Laboratory and Field Technician – Toronto Office

Alston Associates, a division of Terrapex Environmental Ltd., provides comprehensive geotechnical engineering and materials testing services to our clients, ranging from field investigations and laboratory testing to analysis and recommendations for a wide range of civil engineering projects.

Alston Associates office in Toronto has an immediate need for Laboratory and Field Technicians to become part of our dynamic team.
As a successful candidate, you will be required to carry out laboratory tests within our soils and concrete laboratory, and /or carry out field tests, inspections and investigations for concrete, soils, and asphalt, continue to improve your technical abilities and certifications within the framework of the laboratory and field areas of practice.
As an ideal candidate:

    • you will hold a diploma from a recognized college;
    • have an interest or prior experience in material testing and field inspection and testing;
    • have a basic knowledge of construction methodology;
    • have good communication skills (both written and oral);
    • have willingness to work in a team atmosphere;
    • be capable of lifting 20 kg test samples as required by the applicable test procedure as well as be capable of lifting heavy testing equipment as required while performing field testing and inspection;
    • hold a valid Class G driver’s license, and have access to a vehicle for daily use.
